Get Ready for Advent

Advent

It’s the week before Thanksgiving and I’m already thinking about the Advent season.  I love Christmas.  As I was driving home today from a Christmas cookie exchange I turned on the radio.  I have two radio stations to choose from to hear Christmas music.  There is a slight chill in the air.  Christmas is around the corner.  Christmas is coming!

As the angels announced the birth of Christ to the shepherds, we have the privilege of announcing the coming of Christ to our family.

Each year we do two things to help usher in the birth of Christ.  We read from the book The Adventure of Christmas by Lisa Whelchel.  I bought this book when Kate was in first grade and have gone through it each Christmas since.  I love it so much I even read it to my students.  The other thing we do is enjoy a chocolate a day from an advent calendar I pick up for a dollar or two.

Last week, Kate and I found the advent calendars for $1.50 each.  They are tucked in the pantry waiting for December 1.

We read a page a day from The Adventure of Christmas each night after dinner.  Lisa Whelchel does a fabulous job of explaining the origins of our rich Christmas traditions.  She also gives a craft or baked good that you can do as a family to help bring the message home.

If my kids were smaller I would somehow incorporate this advent tree that I found on pinterest into our advent traditions.  Click here to read about it.  You could attach verses to each day. 06cdbbaabb2dd8ed41428b8949f34f91[2]
