“The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” Deuteronomy 34:27a (NIV)
I must confess that Deuteronomy is one of my favorite Old Testament books. I’m guessing you may be thinking why. I know, it’s one of those books that we tend to skip because it’s full of rules. But I would caution you to hold your judgement.
Deuteronomy is rich with God’s declaration of love for us. Over and over He tells us that He loves us. He tells us He is for us. He reminds us that He has our back. Take for example Deuteronomy 10:17 & 18.
For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing.
Or Deuteronomy 16:15b
For the Lord your God will bless you in all your harvest and in all the work of your hands, and your joy will be complete.
Or Deuteronomy 23:5
However, the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you.
Or Deuteronomy 28:13
The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.
Or Deuteronomy 32:10
In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye.
Or Deuteronomy 33:12
Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between his shoulders.
Have I proved my point? Those are just a few examples of the God who is for us, the God who loves us, the God who is all powerful.
Sometimes we need to remind ourselves who our God is. You may be facing a problem that feels like a mountain.
- Remind yourself that you rest between His shoulders because He loves you.
- Remind yourself that you are the apple of His eye.
- Remind yourself that following Him will ultimately end with you on top.
- Remind yourself that we are not under the curse of sin because He loves us and sent Jesus to pay for our sins.
- Remind yourself that your joy is found in Him alone.
- Remind yourself that He defends the weak.
- Remind yourself that He is your refuge and underneath you are His everlasting arms holding you up.
Today, worship the Lord your God because He is good!
