Do You Need a Life Preserver?

worship wednesday

“Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life.” Psalm 138:7(NIV)

Have you ever felt like you were drowning and you needed a word from the Lord?  Last week, that is exactly how I felt.  Life can be hard and yucky and difficult and hard, very hard.  There was an evening that was exceptionally difficult.  The next morning I rose early because the hard was spinning in my mind.

4:10 to be exact.  I glanced at the clock and sighed.  I did not want to be wide awake at 4:10.  I stayed in bed another 10 minutes and realized, I was not going back to sleep.  I grabbed my Bible and spent time in the Word and prayed over the situation as well as my usually prayer list.  I specifically asked the Lord for a word from Him.

At 5 I plugged in my earphones to listen to a sermon while I walked.  The rest of the morning ran smoothly, I had an hour jump on my typical schedule.  I listened to hymns and praise music while getting ready.

I dropped the girls off at their carpool and made my way to work.  And then it happened.  While listening to Christmas music with a 3rd grader in my back seat.  (I should explain that I take my friend’s daughter, who is like a niece to me, to school a few days a week.) The Lord gave me a word.

The small still voice whispered to my soul, In the midst of trouble, I am with you.

That sounded like a Bible verse to me.  When I got to school, I googled “in the midst of trouble” and there it was.  Psalm 138:7.  I felt like my heart was going to explode because He gave me a word that reminded me who He is.

I ran across the hall to my friend and shouted, “I got a word from the Lord today.”  I told her about my morning, how the Lord whispered to me, and what the verse said.

She asked me, “How will you apply that to your life today?”

I smiled because our God is so good.  “Well, it says in the midst of trouble, He preserves my life.  If I think of a life preserver and being in the ocean bobbing around on the waves, I would grab hold of that life preserver and not let go.  I would hug that life preserver because my life would depend on it.  Today, I will hug Jesus.  I will hang onto Him because my life depends on it.”

Maybe you are feeling like you are bobbing around on the waves of life.  Maybe you are about to drown.  May I suggest to you to hang onto Jesus with all you have today?

How do we hang onto to Jesus?  We get in His Word.  We spend time in prayer.  We walk in the good works He has prepared for us to do (Eph. 2:10).  We look to bless others, to love others, to serve others.  And at the end of the day, we express our love for our Savior and we thank Him for preserving our life.

We don’t walk alone through times of trouble.  We have Jesus.
