John 1:1-5 NIV
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
What a powerful way to start the gospel of John! John knew the end of the story, as most authors do. John had been there when Jesus rose from the dead and overcame the darkness. He had seen the holes in Jesus’ hands after Jesus conquered death. John was an eyewitness to the greatest event in history.
That last sentence begs the question, what is the greatest event in history? Was it creation? When Jesus created us as it tells us here and in Colossians. Was it that He took on human flesh as a baby? Was it when He died on the cross for the sins of humanity? Or was it the resurrection, when He conquered death? Regardless of your opinion or my opinion, John knew Jesus. John walked with Jesus. John was one of the inner circle of three. John received the revelation of the end when Jesus will return. Could that be the greatest event? When He returns for His church.
The advent season is as much about Christ being born as a baby as it is about us waiting and watching for His return as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
Your tree may be up, the lights on your house may be hanging in perfect order, and your presents may have already been purchased on Black Friday and wrapped under your tree. You may be ready for Christmas. But are you ready for Christ? Do you know Him? Is He your King? Is He your Lord? Over the next 24 days as you read these short devotionals, search your heart and ask the Lord to reveal Himself to you.
