Day 4: Write Your Prays
Don’t you just love it when you get a love letter from your husband? Okay, true confessions: I have never received a love letter from Kurt. But I thought that was a good way to start this blog post. I hope you are laughing or at least smiling. I have received one love poem and many love notes over the years. He’s good about writing a quick “I love you” on a piece of paper and leaving it for me to find.
I have heard many times that the Bible is God’s love letter to us. But what about our love letter back to Him? I must admit that I was great at this in my early twenties.
I was in my first marriage and miserable. One night, at around 2 or 3 am, I was up reading my Bible and praying. I grabbed a piece of paper and began to write my prayer to the Lord.
The next night I did the same thing. And so on for several months. Each night that we would argue, which seemed almost nightly, I would not be able to go to sleep. I was afraid. But once I was in the kitchen, reading my Bible and writing out my prayers, I felt better.
An amazing thing happened. God moved in me in ways I didn’t think possible. It allowed me to look at my response to unkindness and tweak it. I say tweak, probably completely realign it would be more accurate. God showed me ways I could love a man who did not understand love.
Writing out my prayers gave me the opportunity to stop and think about what to write. Instead of just venting, I began to have compassion and was able to articulate it to the Lord. As I would sit with pen in hand, I could feel the Holy Spirit urging me to a different way of looking at the situation.
Years after we divorced I received a phone call from my ex-husband apologizing and owning his part of our marriage failing. I believe if I had not allowed the Holy Spirit to work through me those scary, lonely nights, I would have never heard the “I’m sorry” I needed to hear.
David wrote many letters to God in the book of Psalm. The example he gives us is beautiful, he begins and ends almost every one with praise to the Lord.

Simple Step
