“I will sacrifice a thank offering to you and call on the name of the Lord.” Psalm 116:17 NIV
If you didn’t read Friday’s post, here’s a portion of it:
A few years ago, I was on a field trip with my students. We went to a huge museum that required a lot of walking. Because I can’t walk too much, I found a quiet place to sit with my Bible while my students and parents broke up into groups for their tours.
I love setting appointments with God. I had been looking forward to this time with Him. I knew I would have about 2 hours of uninterrupted time to hear from the Lord. I don’t get that much time very often.
I sat down with my Bible and a piece of notebook paper. I had a view of a beautiful garden. My chair was soft and comfy. I could hear classical music playing. Everything was set up perfectly for me to hear something. And hear something I did!
I began reading Psalm 116. I love the Psalms. When I read them, I feel like I’ve come home. When I hit verse 17, I paused. It reads, “I will sacrifice a thank offering to you and call on the name of the Lord.” (NIV) Huh? I don’t ever remember reading about or learning about a thank offering before.
I began to jump around the Bible finding these amazing references to a thank offering. I knew as I read these verses this was going to be something I taught on one day. And here we are, two and a half years later.
If you have a moment, grab your Bible or jump on your Bible app and read the entire Psalm 116. It is beautiful. It’s short, only 19 verses. What will that take 60 seconds?
This month I want us to offer thank offerings to the Lord. Today’s verse talks about sacrificing a thank offering. Using the dictionary in my Life Application Bible, I looked up the words, offering and sacrifice. Here’s what it says, “Offering: to present for acceptance; a gift or sacrifice.” And, “Sacrifice: to offer something to God for worship or payment for sin.”
Today, let us present Him with a gift of Worship. I have written on the top of the page in my journal, “Thanksgiving Journal, Day 1.”
I wrote Him a gift of worship. I offered praise to Him. I thanked Him for some things, but mostly wrote worshipful words to Him. What I found interesting was how many times I told Him I love Him. My heart beats for my God.
Simple Steps:
Commit to writing a gift of worship to the Lord everyday this month.
Write a gift of worship to the Lord today. My favorite times to spend with the Lord are either early in the morning before the rest of the house is awake, or late at night when everyone has already gone to bed. Find a time today when you can write a gift of worship to the Lord.
