Master Bedroom
Who is ready to start on Week 2? I am looking forward to the end of the month when everything is in order and the house looks great.
Today I organized our Master Bedroom. I had a little help from my girls. As I mentioned last week, our bookshelves from our former home office now reside in my bedroom. When I moved them, I got rid of a lot of books. Surprisingly, today, I got rid of even more.
We removed every book from the bookshelves and placed them on a card table. Then we went book by book asking ourselves a few questions. When did we last read this book? Will I read it again? Why do I still have it? Taking the time to really evaluate each book brought clarity and led to a nice stack of books for Goodwill.
The next step was to organize them by category. I know you are probably thinking I’m a bit crazy, but it works for me. I have a Christmas section, a fiction section, a gardening section, a Bible study section and so on. You can imagine. Then I put them in size order, largest to smallest. At this point one of my girls rolled her eyes at me, but I pressed on, unscathed by her attitude. Before long we had beautiful looking shelves and a great sense of accomplishment.
I washed all the bedding and ironed the pillow shams.
I have a purple flowered box on my night table. Inside that box I keep my EOS egg-shaped lip balm, a flash light, my allergy pills, and my earphones. It is so much nicer to look at a pretty box, then a bunch of stuff thrown on the table. My night table simply has the box, my alarm clock, and lamp on it. Keeping the clutter away allows me to relax at bedtime.
We share one dresser. My half has two drawers dedicated to craft supplies and the final drawer holds my gift wrapping ribbon. I looked through each drawer and purged what I do not need or will not use.
I keep the remainder of the gift wrap under the bed in two plastic containers. One is for wrapping paper and tags, the other for gift bags. I did take a look inside both. I have a plethora of gift bags, but no Christmas wrapping paper. Now I know to get some before Christmas Eve.
If I may add a word about keeping things under your bed: I don’t see anything wrong with it. I know many organizing professionals say to keep it clean under there, but when you live in a small house, it provides a great place for storage. My bins are neat and organized and tucked away nicely. In all actuality, how often do you wrap a gift? I’m not going to dedicate an entire closet as I’ve seen on Pinterest to an occasional necessity. Now you’ve heard my rant on it. Moving on.

Tomorrow I will be working on the master closet.
Simple Steps:
Look at your bedroom. Tackle the biggest job first. My biggest job was our bookshelves. What is it for you? The dresser or armoire? Empty it out and be critical as you place items back. Do you need it? When is the last time you used it? If you aren’t sure when you last used it and if you need it, get rid of it.
Wash your bedding. Do you have different bedding as the weather gets cooler? Make the switch this month.
Decorate for fall. Put up some fun fall decorations that you have.
Make your bed.
Step back and enjoy your hard work. You will sleep well tonight!
Put another big red X on your calendar. You are doing great.
Come back tomorrow as we organize the master closet.
