Ephesians 1:17 (NIV)

“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.”

Paul is writing to the church in Ephesus.  He wants to encourage the believers to know their identity in Christ.  The book of Ephesians is one of my favorites of Paul’s letters because he continues to point out who we are in Christ.  A reminder I need on a daily basis.

In Ephesians 1:17, we get insight into what Paul prayed for the church.  I could write a book on the first part of this verse, but today let’s look at the “so that.”

“…so that you may know him better.”

Paul wants us to “know Him better.”  How well do you know Him?  Would you like to know Him better?  If so, may I suggest to ask the Lord as Paul did to “give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation.”

Jesus Christ came into this world because He loves us and wants a relationship with us.

Each year in reading I have my students read one of my favorite books, Number the Stars by Lois Lowry.  Before we read this Newbery Award winning book, we talk about prejudice.  We talk about God’s plan of salvation.  One of the questions on their reading packet is, “Why did Jesus come to earth?”

The answer I want is He loves us.  This opens a great discussion about the importance of the relationship we can have with Christ.

I find it fascinating that Paul asks God for wisdom not for wisdom’s sake, but to know our Lord and Savor better.  He created us to be in relationship with Him, this is the reason we were created.

What am I doing today to invest into my relationship with Jesus?  What are you doing?  Are our prayers with relationship in mind?

Today’s challenge is to ask God to give us a Spirit of wisdom and revelation to know Him better!
