“So that your trust may be in the Lord, I teach you today.” Proverbs 22:19 NIV
I was reading my Bible this morning and came across this profound proverb. I underlined it. Meditated on it. Made a note of it to hang this somewhere in my classroom. Ultimately it resonated most with my role as Mom.
I have made my share of mistakes as a mom, but one thing I have strived to do is to teach my girls to trust in the Lord. It is one of the first things I pray about in the morning and one of the last things I pray about before I fall asleep. It is ever on my mind.
Deuteronomy 6:7-9 are verses I try to live out every day. Moses is speaking to the Israelites as they are about to cross over the Jordan River. “Impress them [the Lord’s commands] on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates.” I wrote a blog post entitled 5 Verses Every Parent Should Know. Click on the title to read it. These verses are the first of the five verses I highlighted in that article.
May I encourage you today, if you are a parent or a teacher or an aunt or uncle or grandparent or mentor or youth pastor or children’s ministry volunteer. We are all in this together to teach those we influence to trust in the Lord. We may not see quick results. I know people who have prayed 20, 30, 40 years for their children. Don’t stop! Don’t give in to discouragement! The fruit will come!
We see the here and now but we can’t see the big picture. We can’t see how God is orchestrating things. This is where we choose to trust in God. To trust in His timing. To trust that His plans are better than our plans.
Friends, I wrote this today so that your trust may be in the Lord. Choose today to fully trust Him with your children.
