Galatians 4:6-7 (NIV)
“Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.”
I was reading an article on Facebook last week about 6 or 7 things parents should do with their children. The advice was very familiar, for example, eat dinner as a family. You could probably name them all. However, there was one that quite shocked me and it has stayed with me since I read it.
Teach your child your family history. In doing this, the article suggested that you give your child a sense of where they came from, a sense of belonging, and this in turn allows them security to not give in to peer pressure.
A few days ago, the girls and I were visiting with my parents. My parents just returned from a trip to Ireland. They visited an old church full of Irish history. My mom learned that her family name of Burke was one of the oldest names in Irish history.
As my mom was sharing this with Kate, Kate exclaimed, “And I’m a Burke too!”
I smiled. Here is my beautiful Chinese daughter, excited that her adopted Granny’s roots are so old. You see, Kate is a Burke. It doesn’t matter that she isn’t biologically related to my mom, Kate knows my mom is her granny and that makes her a Burke.
This leads me to the question, how do you see yourself? If you are a believer, you have been adopted into God’s family, making you an heir along with Christ.
Do you see yourself as an heir with Christ? Or do you see yourself as a slave as Paul writes in our verse for today? If we know who we are in Christ, we will be secure. We will have a sense of belonging. We will act as one who knows who they are.
Today remember you are a child of the King of Kings!
